From the Swinging Sixties to Stardom in the Seventies

Charlotte RamplingCharlotte Rampling: height 5'7", weight 112 pounds, hair that's fair, eyes of grey/green, speaks fluent French, fluent German, fluent Spanish. She's a snow and water-skier, horsewoman, swimmer, loving wife and doting mother; also an international film actress.

Charlotte Rampling, 27, co-stars with Sean Connery in "Zardoz," John Boorman's epic vision of the future premiering ....... at the ....... Theatre.

Some of her old running mates from the Swinging Sixties would have to read hard between the lines to even recognize the "Charlie" Rampling they knew.

Unlike the other graduate swingers, she has managed to stroll through into the mellow Seventies, values intact and equilibrium steady.

But it wasn't easy.

"I was like the leader of a cult. It's a wonder I ever emerged alive. At the time the film industry was looking for young people to identify with the new generation. It was like a tidal wave. From dawn to dusk to dawn; parties, premieres, discotheques . There were times I felt I couldn't cope. I used to have terrible depressions."

Some of these must have been caused by the indifference of British film producers. After a spectacular start in the Boulting Brothers' "Rotten to the Core" and as Meredith, Lynn Redgrave's bitchy roommate in "Georgy Girl," she was forced to look elsewhere for encouragement.

Of 15 major feature films including "Zardoz," only four have been made on British soil. For the rest she has shuttled between Italy, Spain, Germany and the U .S .A .

Perhaps the final curtain on her go-everywhere, meet-everyone, do-everything past came with marriage to New Zealandborn Bryan Southcombe, a writer and public relations consultant, and the arrival of their son Barnaby in September 1972.

Charlotte is amused to hear herself saying the very things she would have laughed at a few short years ago.

"Marriage and a baby have totally changed my life. I'm far, far happier."

Not totally changed, she still finds the mixture of moviemaking and motherhood a stimulating one. She shot one picture, "Asylum," when she was five months pregnant.

John Boorman's "Zardoz" is an odyssey into the future that tells of the formation and eventual destruction of an elite community in which Miss Rampling is a leading member and the top zoologist. Her co-star is Sean Connery who plays the savage destroyer. The 20th Century- Fox release premiers .......at the .....Theatre .
