OTHYRWORLD
- Beyond Into the Night of Day
April 2005 - Flash Magazine (Italy) - Review by Ulisse Carminati
Valuation
grade: 90 / 100
This
mysterious moniker hide the come back of the biggest band
that the 80's never beget: clever Jeff Ulmer's SACRED
BLADE !!!
In fact, after the first masterpiece "Of the Sun + Moon" remaster
done 4 years ago, the Canadian man of genius shows now this
"brand new" work, where anyway perform again the best of the
first CD, the purpose revisited by a viewpoint that considers
20 past years of music where a few new tracks added gives
a final result very homogeneous and completely different
comparing to the first work, even though all Jeff's typical
sound characteristics still intact, that means Heavy Prog
on RUSH way, YES Prog Rock, lysergic digressions by PINK
FLOYD and HAWKIND's space metal: all that make the music framework, then
properly strengthened by massive and devastating Power Epic amount.
All that is very well highlighted moreover by the opener
track "Of the Sun + Moon" that introduced by the space and sweetest
"Ayltuthus" grows following imposing and really epic outlines,
yet supported by an hardest guitar riffing power oriented
with hard and prog articulation of uncommon expressiveness
and vocal lines chanting and space background by the same Jeff that play
all instruments with the help of the original drummer Ted Zawadzki.
More fast and powerful turn out the following "Fields the
Sunshrine" that oppose Epic Power outlines to unexpected progressive
and space breaks, enriched by fabulous guitar solos that
prelude sudden restart on the border of Speed Metal, making
a lethal killing final result.
"Odyssey of Light" is the first brand new track of the CD
and is made up of a lysergic and dreamy instrumental that
is a witness to complete Jeff's devotion to PINK FLOYD of
"Dark Side of the Moon" that properly introduce "Ethereal
Skyline", another unpublished track and totally enslaved to
the Epic Power more magniloquent and polished, even if vocal
lines are still space background and guitar solos fugues
presume a progressive music knowledge not at all superficial,
as well taken out on the other hand inside the grand middle
break that wonderfully mix together PINK FLOYD, YES and RUSH.
The sweet and oneiric acoustic interlude of "The Reign of
Night Reinz" is very soon sweep away by the rushing like thunder
of "Legacy", song that in this particular new version like
more the Progressive Heavy side instead of the original Epic
Metal halo, and beautiful symphonic breaks on those discord
solos soars in the YES way.
"Right Ascension" is another previously unrealised track and
grows up on Epic Power outlines of excellent making, more
enriched by typical Jeff's digressions Hard & Heavy and is
supported by a one more masterly basic riffing that level
with refrain is more melodic till reach the sweetest middle
break.
The introspective "To Lunar Winds" take to the listening of
the real masterpiece of the complete work, that means the
one more brand-new "Alignment" that against a beginning softly
suffused set a superb Heavy Prog growth, actually lost in
the sidereal dark spaces, thanks to really heaviest riffs
making but in the meantime full of RUSH influences that gives to this track
an uncommon new dimension and forebodes interesting development for the
future sound of the band.
"The Pressing" is still true Heavy Prog in its pure state
that gives concrete thrills in the refrain incipit guitars
on Power border lines, leading to middle break one more time
space background, whereas a lot more Heavy is "In Light of
the Moon" with a hammering rhythm to Speed Metal borders,
finding at the end its own catharsis inside the wonderful
refrain.
All is ended by the instrumental "Moon" with the triad PINK
FLOYD-RUSH-HAWKWIND opportunely mistreated by massive amounts
of Heavy Metal "de luxe". Jeff's own production of this work
is simply astronomical, the artwork truly beautiful so all
kids be involved hunting it !!!
