the reign of night rainz
music by ulmer

Notes:

The Reign Of Night Rainz is one of many pieces that utilise an atmospheric backdrop, in this case thunder and rainfall. For the 1986 version, these effects were achieved with my voice (thunder) and a movie foley trick using multi layered plastic bags performances. The 2000 version uses actual location recordings for this effect, which are further enhanced using QSound™ three dimensional processing.

There are a total of 7 acoustic guitars, 2 electric guitars and 2 bass guitars being performed in this piece. I believe the addition of the fretless bass part enhances the composition, adding another layer of tonality to the work. In addition, the transition between The Reign Of Night Rainz and Legacy is more dramatic in this version.

Instrumentation:

Acoustic guitars were captured using Neumann U87 and Sennheiser ND409 microphones feeding Daking and Avalon preamplifiers. Les Paul and Jazz basses were recorded direct input through Jenson transformers and an Amek/Neve preamplifier. Orchestral bells were captured with a U87 through a Daking preamplifier.

Atmospheric and ambience tracks were processed using QSound™.
